Ambroxide ((-)-Ambroxide) is a bicyclic terpenoid with a complex structure, contributing to its distinctive ambergris scent. It is synthesized from sclareol, a component of the essential oil of clary sage. The synthesis involves oxidative degradation to a lactone, hydrogenation to the corresponding diol, and dehydration to form ambroxide.
