Polysorbate 80 is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier widely used in pharmaceuticals, food production, and cosmetics. (Alkest TW 80) stabilizes emulsions, enhances solubility of active ingredients, and reduces surface tension in aqueous solutions. Polysorbate 80 is a hydrophilic nonionic surfactant widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient to stabilize aqueous formulations of injectable medications and vaccines. Polysorbate 80 acts as a solubilizing agent, helping substances that normally wouldn’t dissolve in water to become soluble, which is crucial for parenteral drugs and vaccination formulations. In addition to its pharmaceutical use, Polysorbate 80 also functions as an emulsifier in food products, and In cosmetics/personal care products as an surfactant. PS 80 role as an emulsifier helps mix ingredients and prevent separation, making it a versatile ingredient in both pharmaceutical and consumer products. Polysorbate 80 is approved for use in several vaccines licensed in the USA and plays a key role in maintaining formulation stability. Also refered to as (Kolliphor PS 80, Montanox 80, Alkest TW 80, Kotilen-80, Polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate) by speciality chemicals suppliers and manufacturers.

Chemical Properties & Specifications
Not classified as hazardous
P261: Avoid breathing vapors (if heated). P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously.
Used as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and stabilizer in injectables, vaccines, and oral formulations.
Functions as an emulsifier in ice creams, salad dressings, sauces, and desserts.
Used in creams, lotions, shampoos for emulsifying and solubilizing oils and actives.
Enhances bioavailability by improving solubility of hydrophobic drugs.
Prevents phase separation in both food and pharmaceutical emulsions.
Stabilizes biological molecules in vaccines (e.g., COVID-19, flu).
Polysorbates undergo degradation by auto-oxidation, producing reactive peroxides, in addition to hydrolysis. Exposure to light of polysorbate 80 aqueous solution leads autoxidation of the alkyl polyoxyethylene chain leading to the production of hydroperoxide derivatives. The peroxides cause oxidative damage to the protein molecule that makes up the formulation. The residual peroxides and the rate of peroxide generation as a result of light exposure are found to vary for polysorbate 80 of different grades/from different sources.
